3. Proof Dustjacket
There is some variation in the base colour of fawn on the dustjackets for The Remains of the Day and usually a clear difference in shade between the back cover and flaps. There are several copies recorded of a test dustjacket with a uniform and paler flax colour for the spine, back and flaps. The text on the test version varies as follows: there is no price on the front flap, on the back cover the author photograph is different, there is no bar code and there’s no credit for the front cover photograph.

There is a variant with the number 4 handwritten on the front cover before the publication date. Stapled to the verso of the front cover are 2 publicity sheets with quotes about The Remains of the Day and a photocopy of an article about Ishiguro from Newsweek, 26th January 1987. Taped over the half title is a publicity blurb for the book and on verso is stapled an interview with Ishiguro from The Bookseller, 14th April 1989.
