2. Proof
Jonathan Cape. Paperback. Half title, title, [iii], 370 pages numbered 3-372. Pages 297mm x 210mm. Front: a black and white photo of a girl sitting on stone steps with at top in white ‘A JONATHAN CAPE UNCORRECTED PROOF’, and at the bottom in cream: ‘IAN McEWAN’, and in orange ‘AN ATONEMENT’. The leaves are A4 size and are bound with a black plastic spiral a transparent plastic sheet at the front and plain white card at the back.
Note: This proof was famously printed with the title ‘An Atonement’ when a friend of Ian McEwan suggested dropping the word ‘An’. The publishers were then in a rush to change the artwork and print layout before the books were printed. This may explain why none of the usual paperback proofs were produced.
3. Waterstones Edition – movie tie-in

Note: This is exactly the same as the standard First Edition but with the addition of a tipped in page before the half title with the text, ‘This is one of five hundred copies of the first edition of Atonement signed by the author.’. Underneath it is signed in black ink by Ian McEwan. Most of these appear to have been distributed to the book trade in the USA.
